Brexit: New move to keep EU citizenship for UK nationals. Restoration of lost citizenship * Austrian, German, Polish OR Spanish.

If you are one of the 48% of voters in the Brexit referendum who wanted to remain in the European Union in 2016, you may be able to secure EU citizenship before Britain leaves the bloc.

With the increasing uncertainty about Brexit, one may wish to consider to apply for another EU citizenship through an ancestry route. Some countries allow Dual Nationality between two European countries, however, this might change once the UK leaves the EU. So, if you have European ancestry, you may qualify for an EU Passport.

TEach country has its own set of rules allowing a potential claim to restore lost citizenship.

Former German citizens who were deprived of their German citizenship on political, racial (Romany), or religious (Jewish, Jehovah’s Witness) grounds may have their citizenship restored. This generally also applies to their descendants. It is important to know that anyone who after being deprived of their German citizenship acquired a foreign citizenship is entitled to have their German citizenship restored.

Also, Polish citizenship may be restored to foreigners who used to hold Polish citizenship in the past but lost it before January 1st, 1999, based on specific events defined by the Polish law.

Finally, the Austrian citizenship can be regained if a female Austrian citizen who lost Austrian citizenship prior to September 1st, 1983 because they married a foreigner (renouncing present citizenship is required).

Children born out of marriage are eligible for Austrian citizenship if the mother is Austrian at the time of child’s birth if the child is still a minor (under-16) at the time of his/her parent’s marriage and the father is an Austrian citizen at the time of the child’s birth.

There is also eligibility if the father is an Austrian citizen and the parents acknowledged paternity (declaration of paternity) within 8 weeks after birth.
