Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur)

Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) category allows MBA and other graduates to extend their stay after graduation to establish business in the UK. This is also available for overseas graduates who have been identified by UK Trade Investment (UKTI) as elite global graduate entrepreneurs who intend on establishing business in the UK.

Limit on Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) Applications

The UK government has limited the number of applications that can be made under Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) category.

There is a limit of 2,000 places per year (running from 6 April 2013 to 5 April 2014).

The limit of 2,000 places will be allocated as follows:

  • 900 places will be allocated to qualifying Higher Education Institutions for graduates in any subject, known as General endorsements;
  • 1,000 places will be allocated to qualifying Higher Education Institutions for MBA graduates, known as MBA endorsements; and
  • 100 places will be allocated to UKTI for overseas graduates, known as Global endorsements.

Eligibility Criteria

For your application to be successful, you must score a total of 95 points and meet all the other requirements of the Immigration Rules

You have been endorsed by a UK Higher Education Institution or UKTI. 25 points
You have been awarded a recognised Bachelor degree, Masters degree or PhD which is a UK degree; orfor Global Graduate Entrepreneurs only, one which is deemed by UKNARIC to meet or exceed the standard of a UK Bachelor’s degree; orYour previous grant of leave was as a Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) migrant and you have an endorsement for an extension application from the same institution. 25 points
The endorsement confirms that your endorsing body has assessed you and your business idea. 25 points
English language You can score these points if you:

  • Are a national of a majority English-speaking country; or
  • Pass an English language test approved by us; or
  • Hold a degree that was taught in English and is equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree or above.

MaintenanceTherefore you must show that you have:

  • £1,800 in personal savings for 90 consecutive days if you are applying from outside the UK; or
  • £900 in personal savings for 90 consecutive days if you are applying from inside the UK.

Eligible Candidates

  • Student; or
  • Tier 4; or
  • Student nurse; or
  • Student re-sitting an examination; or
  • Student writing up a thesis; or
  • Postgraduate doctor or dentist.
